The Q1

Jeff Simpson on reducing the number of illegal workers
5th september 2007
by Jeff Simpson

By our partners at the Las Vegas Sun

The federal Homeland Security Department plans this month to begin enforcing workplace regulations that will require businesses to screen their employees to make sure their Social Security numbers match their names.

If names and numbers don't match, businesses have 30 days to check for clerical errors, and employees have 60 days to prove their identity.Employees who are unable to prove their identity must be let go, and employers who don't terminate employees without valid identities are subjects to fines up to $10,000.

Illegal immigration is a hot-button issue, and it's difficult to avoid antagonizing extrememists on both sides.

Here is Las Vegas there are a lot of illegal immigrants, probably more than 100,000. Many of them work. A federal crackdown on businesses with employees without verified identities would undoubtedly be painful to those workers and employers.

But government and many employers have ignore the widespread use of bogus identifying documents for too long, and the ability of computer databases to cross reference names with Social Security numbers makes the new crackdown a sensible one, as long as it is enforced without favoritism.

I think immigrants have always been one of our nation's greatest strengths, and i support liberalized legal immigration policies that would allow more folks to pursue the American Dream.

But it doesn't make sense to close our eyes to the rampant use of fake names or Social Security numbers when technology, combined with government and business follow-through, can root out those who are working illegally.

All business should have to play by the same rules, and the government should make sure they do.If businesses want to be able to employ more immigrants, they should lobby Congress to allow more legal immigration.

1. Using the article above, discuss the questions below

a) In your opinion, where would the illegal workers come from in Las Vegas? what occupations would these workers be involved in?

b)Homeland Security was set up after 9-11. why do you think that the managing of illegal workers is of a prime concern in the casinos?

c)With a large number of illegal workers in Las Vegas, would they not be contributing to the income of the city by their services rather than bing a burden to the city and state?

d)In your opinion, would this situation of illegal workers be predominant in the upcoming IR's in Singapore? Would it affect you?

I'm sorry guys. . . i totally had no clue your didnt received~~!~

2)Indian tribal gaming is regulated on three levels. What are they?

3)In Nevada, Gaming is a "Privileged Enterprise".
a) What are the priviledges?
b)Do you think it will be the same in Singapore soon?

qns1 is a article question. . . . i gonna take some time to type that out, meanwhile , here are the 2nd and 3rd questions.

Sorry class~
apologies!

Let It Burn!

Dear classmates,

Anyone wants to have a barbecue?

For a catching up session.

Just barbecue alone and no chalet.

We can sleep at the roadside if we want to.

Most probably at East Coast Park.

Yours Sincerely,
DTRM2B01

If you have nose bleed!

If you are having colds nd flu!

  • Avoid close contact during the contagious period.
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Dispose of all tissue used to blow your nose immediately after use
  • Cover your mouth and nose with tissue or handkerchief when coughing or sneezing Treating cold symptoms won't cure your cold, but it will make you feel better until your body fights off the virus. General measures include:
  • Rest. Refusing to rest can result in worse symptoms, delayed recovery, and even relapses.
  • Fluids. Drink at least two quarts of clear liquids per day, but avoid mild, salty foods, and broths. This will promote drainage.
    SYMPTOMS COLDS FLU
Fever Common in children, Usual in adults and adults Common in children
Muscle Aches Mild, infrequent Very common, often severe
Fatigue Mild, brief Can be severe and lasting several weeks
Nausea, Vomiting, and Diarrhea Uncommon Common, especially in children
Congestion, runny nose, sore throat Common especially early stages of illness Common, but late in course of illness
  • Humidify dry air. Moist air decreases swelling of the respiratory tract and helps to clear our mucus.
  • Avoid tobacco smoke. Smokers catch more colds which last longer than in non-smokers. Children whose partners smoke also have more colds and ear infections.
  • Special instructions for infants: Inf ants and very young children are best treated without cold medicines, since they may not work and have unpredictable side effects in the very young. In addition to the measures above, stuffy noses can be treated with saline nose drops (1/4 tsp. salt in 4 oz. water). 2-3 drops in each nostril for up to 150-30 seconds., followed by suctioning with a bulb syringe. This allows infants to sleep more comfortably since they can't breathe well through their mouths.

HAHA. . . .the class outing!

Today is the last paper and finally all SP's dtrm students are released from the dread of exams and school! Therefore, we decided to hang out together! Though it was kind of boring but we had a good time hanging out together. Sihua and Emily decided to have their own program, the same goes to Siew Foong, Simin and Candy. So in the end, we are left with qiuhua, ruizuan, shuqi, mavis, me, weiming, huijue, peijing, wanlian, singying.
A little commercial break before the class outing to Vivocity!!!

This is the cranky phone that rang in the exam hall, the phone is switched off for the first time but the alarm rang!!!! What a unpredictable phone. . .okay, let's get back to subject. I'm going to put out some unique pictures of the day!

it all started with this wo-zhi-shan, five-fingers mountain. Maybe, Wanlian's cao yao might helped to cure this! ~wink wink!!!!
We are all in the MRT and i think we are the central of attention!
This is Singying who is laughing like crazy with Wanlian and PeiJing! and there's a mysterious guy at the back trying hard not to look at Singying!!WOR~~~or is he just avoiding my camera? This is Mavis and the goup in the train that is the loudest!
We all decides to have dinner and here are the trios!

The Qiuhua'a gang who like to qiang jing tou! Poor Mavis~can't see her face!
This is the Kan-Cai-Tou dinner. . . . .Bak Gu Teh at $8.10, what the fish. . . . really cut my head. . . . ..(the pun with my surname is just coincidence)
After the dinner, we decides to go to the terrace, over there, we crowd. . . . . . . .
and we crowd. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . .
why why why?
